Why do people only panic about a global pandemic when it's at the door?

I wondered the same thing my self. I live in NC, where there are suspected cases of the flu. They wont let us know where the cases are and if we should protect ourselves with masks in certain areas. I am pregnant with an 11 month old baby at home. These are my risks. Shouldn't they let us at least know where the suspected cases our. For instance, if its in my home town shouldn't I know so I can start protecting myself other than washing my hands when I have to go to an appointment at a doctor's office?
