In Pokemon Pearl, does gaining happiness by leveling with EXP Share still count?

I'd prefer to let my highest-level Pokemon rack in the experience while my Golbat just sits back and relaxes, safe from KO. Does it still gain happiness from leveling if I use the EXP Share hold item, or does the Pokemon itself need to battle to gain the happiness?
