What if intelligent design didn't endorse a specific god or religion?

I'm an atheist, so I never took intelligent design seriously, because it's advocates always think "their god" is the one behind it. But what if it wasn't endorsed to be connected with any god or religion, and at most an "unknown creator"? While there is still no proof, and the concept is completely man made, would it be a more viable theory if partisan religious rhetoric was kept out of it?
