By law does atty have to give a reciept?

i hired an family atty in nov 08 who asked for a retainer fee of 2500 for first 10hrs. in feb 09 we had our 1st conversation since our first consultation letting me know where we stand. i received a letter in march 09 that we had mediation in april 09. i asked for a receipt like 3 times during the month. until the day i settled i never got a receipt. is this legal?
